Disability Claims Management Specialist

Job Description

The Disability Claims Specialist is responsible for the full lifecycle adjudication of short-term disability (weekly indemnity) and long-term disability claims, including medical and non-occupational leaves. This is a member-facing role requiring empathy, strong judgment, technical competence, and a high level of professionalism. The successful candidate will work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders and external providers to ensure accurate, timely, and confidential claims handling, case management and payments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Determine eligibility for disability benefits per Plan Texts, policies, legislation, and supporting documentation
  • Assess medical, functional, and occupational information to support accurate adjudication of Weekly Indemnity, LTD and Medical Leave claims
  • Escalate complex or borderline claims to Manager
  • Prepare summaries for Trustee review as required
  • Records, Systems & Payments

    • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential member files (digital and physical)
    • Input and verify system-generated calculations; perform manual overrides for benefit amounts, offsets, and/or taxes as required
    • Identify and calculate amounts for recovery where CPP, WCB benefits or earlier than expected return to work have or may result in overpayment
    • Communicate recovery amounts and expectations for repayment to all affected parties, and follow ups to ensure collection
    • Ensure payments are aligned with financial limits and policy rules
    • Facilitate Member support & communication
    • Serve as the primary contact for disability-related inquiries from members
    • Deliver accurate and compassionate responses to complex cases
    • Educate members on WEBC’s digital tools and claims process navigation

    Continuous Improvement & Collaboration

    • On a 1 to 1 basis, supports other team members and new employees by demonstrating the execution of specific tasks and duties and sharing knowledge and experience
    • Maintain up to date knowledge of disability management best practices, policies and procedures, legal compliance issues, system requirements and other information related to the application of disability management services through continuous learning initiatives including internal learning activities, presentations, or workshops
    • Recommend process and control enhancements
    • Support onboarding of team members and contribute to team knowledge-sharing
    • Participate in team workflow planning and cross-coverage as needed

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education training and experience. Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in disability claims adjudication (group benefits, insurance, unionized or multi-employer context preferred)
  • Strong working knowledge of disability claim practices, medical terminology, and benefit contracts
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (verbal & written)
  • High level of attention to detail and ability to manage sensitive information with discretion

Preferred

  • Familiarity with WSBC/WCB, CPP-D, and EI-Sick Leave interactions
  • Designation such as CDMP or a background in OT/PT/Kinesiology/Nursing are considered an asset
  • CEBS designation is also considered an asset
